Attorney General's Office will review the situation of Agricultural and Environmental sectors of the country and problems of the archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina

The Attorney General's Office held on 7 and 8 June, the "Annual Meeting of Environmental and Agricultural Trial Attorneys" in order to discuss the current situation of Agricultural and Environmental sectors and institutions, and analyze environmental problems , social and economic is now facing the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

For the event, which will be held at the Club Nautico de San Andres Island and will be chaired by the Deputy Attorney Environmental and Agricultural Affairs, Oscar Dario Amaya Navas, are expected to attend the general manager of the Colombian Institute for Rural Development ( INCODER), Myriam Villegas, and territorial and environmental authorities in the archipelago.

The prosecution will reiterate its call to Government to be built an instrument of public policy that addresses the issues facing various types of San Andres and give due importance to the declaration of "Seaflower Biosphere Reserve" which holds the archipelago granted recognition in 2000 from Unesco, which involves the review of the current development model, the forms of land occupation and use of resources.

As announced to the public on 18 May, the attorney told the national environmental authorities concerned that the condition of the Archipelago Biosphere Reserve is seriously threatened in their social, economic and environmental.

The prosecution has shown that the model of special waste management and hospital in San Andres has had serious difficulties in recent years that the water system lacks adequate coverage, and that the management of wastewater and sludge mined in tankers pose serious health risks.

It also warned that there is overfishing and illegal construction in coastal areas; not detected a recovery strategy for sensitive areas such as mangroves, forests and wetlands, the bay has gradually developed into a "graveyard of ships" with legal problems and / or mechanical and social situation of the archipelago, in general, progressively deteriorates. In the opinion of the Agency, these situations require immediate action, coordinated at the national bodies and regional levels.
